Do you dream of picture-perfect Christmas parties? I do — and I suspect I’m not alone. I imagine a scene like White Christmas mixed with The Holiday: Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald playing softly, guests dressed in festive attire, laughter and conversation drifting through the room, plates and glasses in hand. It’s the kind of holiday gathering that feels timeless and warm.
Is eggnog over the top for this dream? Not at all — especially when paired with my take on a croque monsieur.

I’ve always wanted a party like this. For years I wondered why real gatherings didn’t feel as effortless and magical as the ones in my imagination. The realization was simple: if I wanted that kind of party, I’d have to host it myself.
Deciding to host is the hardest step. The holidays are busy, and it’s easy to convince yourself not to deal with the planning — theme, menu, timing, guest list. This year I refused to make excuses.
Rather than preparing a full sit-down meal, I prefer serving a selection of thoughtful bites guests can nibble on throughout the night. This year’s star appetizer is my twist on the classic croque monsieur. Traditionally a ham-and-cheese sandwich with béchamel, my version takes a different route.
I layer thinly sliced turkey with smoky Gouda and a quick homemade cranberry jam. The result is a harmonious balance of sweet, savory, and salty flavors that works perfectly in a handheld sandwich.

These small sandwiches are ideal for a mingle-and-munch party: guests can grab one or two, chat, and sample other bites. As a host, smaller portions are easier to prepare, and many components can be made ahead. That reduces stress the day of the event and lets me enjoy my own party.
Another trick I use is making appetizers in bulk and cutting them into smaller servings. That keeps prep time manageable while still offering plenty of variety.

Turkey & Cranberry Croque Monsieur

Ingredients
For the cranberry jam
- 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1 orange
- 1 sprig fresh rosemary
- 1 cup light brown sugar
For the sandwiches
- 1 loaf sliced country-style bread (approximately 14 slices)
- ½ cup Dijon mustard
- 1 lb thinly sliced turkey breast
- 6 oz smoked Gouda shredded
- 1 cup prepared cranberry jam (ingredients above)
Instructions
For the jam

Slice the orange as thinly as possible, then dice into small pieces.

Combine cranberries, orange pieces, rosemary, and brown sugar in a small pot and bring to a boil.

Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cook until the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens, about 10–12 minutes.

Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
For the sandwiches

Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet and toast in the oven until lightly browned and crisp, about 3–5 minutes per side. Remove from the oven.

Spread half the slices with Dijon mustard. Top with sliced turkey and shredded Gouda. Return to the oven briefly, about 2 minutes, to melt the cheese.

Spread the remaining slices with cranberry jam and place them on top of the prepared sandwiches.

Sprinkle additional shredded cheese on top and return to the oven until the cheese melts, about 3 minutes. Allow sandwiches to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
