We’re continuing Nature Week in our at-home summer camp series that Bri from Parties With A Cause and I are hosting. Today we’re sharing simple, kid-friendly bug snack ideas that are fun to assemble and even more fun to eat.

My boys and I enjoyed making these edible crafts, transforming fruits, vegetables, cream cheese, peanut butter and crackers into little bug characters. Most of our creations started with celery for a stable base. I trimmed the bottoms so each stick would sit flat on the platter.

To make assembly easier, spoon your cream cheese or peanut butter into a sandwich bag, snip a corner, and pipe it onto the celery. I used whipped cream cheese and stirred it well before filling the bag so it piped smoothly.

Kids can spread a line of cream cheese or peanut butter down the center of each celery stick as the foundation for their bug designs.

One of our favorites were pretzel butterflies. After adding peanut butter to the celery, Dylan pressed two pretzels in for wings and used a blueberry for the head. We also made versions with cream cheese and either a black olive or cherry tomato for the head.

For ladybugs, spread cream cheese on a cracker, top with a cherry tomato (cut with a small notch to suggest wings) and add a black olive for the head. We used tiny rosemary pieces pushed into the olive to create antennae.

Bri also shared a lovely Ladybug Appetizer on her site that complements these ideas well and offers another simple option to try during Nature Week.

These bug snacks would be adorable for a backyard birthday party, a picnic, or as part of any nature-themed activity with kids. They’re quick to assemble, customizable based on dietary needs, and encourage children to try different fruits and vegetables.
We’re also hosting a Facebook group where parents can share ideas for keeping kids entertained throughout the summer. It’s a place to swap recipes, crafts and activities—come join us if you’d like to share or get inspiration.
