Blood Orange Salty Dog Cocktail Recipe — Tangy Citrus Vodka Drink

It’s Friday and maybe a blizzard is rolling in — the perfect moment to introduce our next contender for Drink of the Winter 2016.

Blood Orange Salty Dog Recipe

Now is the season for citrus, and markets are overflowing with varieties: kumquats, loquats, cara cara oranges, ruby red grapefruit — and the showstopper, blood oranges. Their deep color and fragrant aroma make them irresistible in winter cocktails.

Blood oranges can seem more style than substance, but the batch I picked up last week was sweet, sultry, and perfectly cocktail-ready. Their flavor brightens and deepens classic mixed drinks without overpowering them.

I adore a Salty Dog for its simplicity and color — and, of course, the salted rim. If you haven’t tried the other winter drinks yet, pick up the ingredients before you get snowed in and spend the weekend tasting them. Leave a comment and let me know which is your favorite. Stay warm, take breaks while shoveling, and try wearing a pair of gloves under your mittens for extra warmth. Lots of love from North Dakota!
